Session Content

The style, content and structure of our workshop based sessions does differ slightly from our mobile sessions. All sessions are obviously dependant on the length of the contract and ultimately, the amount of time spent with the young people. However, our sessions will always include some or all of the following subject areas. Sessions can be tailored to the needs/interests of the young people as required.

Classroom / Groupwork Sessions

• The consequences and future implications of riding illegally – Section 59, Penalty points, Ban, Insurance premiums etc

• Young peoples experiences – Cars/Bikes, Rider/Passenger, Legal/Illegal, Safe/Unsafe

• DVD – Too Young To Die, What If?, Get The Message

• Computer Based – Theory Test, Hazard Perception Test, Street Sense, Insurance comparison website.

• Newspaper Article Analysis re: Young Drivers/Riders, accidents, fatalities, dangerous driving.

• Mini-bikes, Pit-Bikes and the law

• Getting On the Road – What to do, when to do it, and how much does it cost. Application for a driving licence, C.B.T, buying a bike, tax, MOT, Insurance, V5, protective clothing.

Workshop / Practical Sessions

• Motorbike maintenance – what to check, how to check, when to check.

• How does an engine work?

• What three things does an engine need to run?

• Engine top end rebuild

• Strip, clean and reassemble carburettor

• Remove, inspect, replace brake shoes/brake pads

• Basic electrics, make a continuity tester and test wires

• Prepare parts for painting

• Paint spraying techniques

• Full bike rebuild

• Full bike restoration

Riding Skills Sessions

• The importance of protective clothing

• Familiarise with fascia, controls, lights etc

• Start-stop manoeuvre

• Figure of eight

• Slow speed stability

• Slalom

• U-Turn

• T-Junction

• Controlled stop

Qualifications / Accreditation

We are currently delivering the ABC Level 1 award/certificate/diploma in Motor Vehicle Studies. The course is designed to fit within the Foundation Learning Tier 14 – 19 reforms and consists of a range of units that young people can choose from to make up their portfolio. Young people must complete 3 units for the award and 6 units for the certificate. The diploma consists of 12 units and is available to post 16’s. The course is recognized on the Qualification Credit Framework.

We are happy to work with referring agencies to achieve other accredited outcomes for young people if required. We have experience in delivering AQA Unit Awards, ASDAN Youth Achievement Awards, OCN Units and COPE.
